_Things I Wish Every Homeowner Knew Before Starting a Home Project

When most people think about working with MeshedDesigns, they think kitchens, bathrooms, cabinetry, flooring, paint colors and renovations.

But there’s another side of what we do that many people don’t realize we offer:

Finish + Furnish.

This is for the homeowner who wants more than a beautifully renovated room. They want a space that feels completely pulled together—from the sofa and chairs to the window treatments, lighting, rugs, artwork and finishing touches.

And maybe most importantly? They don’t want to figure all of that out themselves.

Porches need painting too. This got a major refresh!
A complete transformation to this porch simply using paint!

Because Furnishing a Home Can Be Harder Than It Looks

There are thousands of options out there.

Walk into a furniture store and you’re surrounded by sofas, sectionals, chairs, tables and entire room displays. Open Instagram or Pinterest and suddenly you’re being shown everything your living room supposedly needs.

It can get overwhelming very quickly.

And one of the biggest mistakes we see is homeowners purchasing furniture before they really understand what their space needs.

You find the huge sectional you love, buy it…and six months later decide you’re ready to replace the flooring, paint the walls or renovate the adjoining kitchen.

Now we’re designing around a sofa that may not have been the right scale for the room in the first place.

That’s why we like to look at the entire picture.

Bigger Isn’t Always Better

Somewhere along the way, we’ve gotten the idea that everything needs to be oversized.

The giant sectional. The huge coffee table. The massive entertainment center.

But furniture shouldn’t overpower your room.

It should work with it.

Sometimes the right choice is a generously sized sofa that anchors a large living room. Sometimes it’s a more tailored sofa with two chairs that gives the room better flow. Sometimes it’s an antique table, a vintage cabinet or a piece you already own that we give new life with paint or refinishing.

The goal isn’t to fill every available inch.

It’s to understand the scale of the room, how you actually live in it and what combination of pieces will make it feel comfortable, functional and intentional.

Your Home Doesn’t Have to Look Like Everyone Else’s

There’s another reason we love the furnishing side of design: it gives us an opportunity to bring more personality into your home.

If every piece comes from the same furniture store—or is inspired by the same handful of images circulating online—it’s pretty easy to end up with a room that looks like everyone else’s.

We can shop differently.

Maybe we invest more in the sofa you’ll sit on every single day and choose a higher-quality piece that will serve you well for years.

Then we mix in vintage.

We refinish something you already own.

We find artwork that means something to you.

We select window treatments specifically for your space instead of grabbing whatever happens to be available off the shelf.

Not everything needs to be expensive. But everything should have a reason for being there.

That’s where professional design makes a difference.

What Does Finish + Furnish Include?

Depending on your home and your needs, we can help coordinate the pieces that bring a room or an entire home together, including:

  • Furniture and furniture placement
  • Rugs
  • Lighting
  • Blinds and window treatments
  • Artwork and wall décor
  • Accessories and finishing pieces
  • Color and material coordination
  • Sourcing new, vintage and specialty pieces
  • Incorporating furniture or décor you already own

And because we’re looking at the room as a whole, we’re thinking about things you might not notice while standing in a furniture showroom.

Is that sofa the right depth?

Does its scale work with your ceiling height?

Will you have enough room to comfortably walk behind the chairs?

Where will someone set their coffee?

How does the rug size affect the way the entire seating area feels?

What happens when the window treatments are added?

Those little decisions are what make a room feel right.

Who Is Finish + Furnish For?

This isn’t necessarily the right service for every homeowner and that’s okay.

Finish + Furnish is an elevated level of design service for someone who wants to invest in their home and would rather have a professional guide the process than spend weekends driving from furniture store to furniture store.

Maybe you don’t know where to start.

Maybe decorating simply isn’t your thing.

Maybe you know what you like when you see it, but you struggle to put all the pieces together.

Or maybe you could do it yourself, but you don’t want the stress, time or endless decisions that come with it.

That’s exactly why this service exists.

A Home That Feels Finished

One of my favorite parts of design is seeing the point where a space stops feeling like a collection of individual decisions and starts feeling like a home.

The construction is complete.

The furniture fits.

The window treatments soften the room.

The lighting is right.

There are pieces with personality and pieces that simply make everyday life easier.

Everything works together.

So if you’re planning a renovation—or you’ve already finished one and you’re looking around thinking, Now what do I put in here?—you don’t have to figure out the rest on your own.

We can help you finish it. And furnish it.
