When you walk into a home, it should instantly feel like you belong there. That was our guiding principle in the living room and entryway transformation for the Schmitz family—create connection, warmth, and flow, all within an open-concept layout.

A Calm Entry That Welcomes You Home

The entryway sets the tone for the entire home, and in this case, the transformation was subtle yet impactful. We started with a fresh, clean paint palette and added contrast with a bold black front door and matte black hardware. The rich wood closet doors provide warmth and echo the oak elements in other parts of the house, creating cohesion from the first step inside.

A woven runner grounds the space while softening the visual line of the hallway. A corner chair and indoor plant bring a cozy vibe, making this entry feel like more than just a pass-through.

Designing for Everyday Comfort in the Living Room

The living room is where the family spends most of their downtime, so comfort and function were top priorities. We opted for a large-scale sectional sofa in a neutral tone, perfect for stretching out or gathering together. Built-in swivel chairs near the front window offer extra seating without interrupting the flow of the open floor plan.

With flooring continuous throughout the space, the transition between living, kitchen, and entry feels seamless—visually expanding the home and enhancing the modern open-concept design.

A Fireplace That Feels Fresh

We kept the existing brick fireplace and simply refinished the mantel in a light wood tone that mirrors the kitchen island. This preserved the original charm while subtly modernizing the focal point of the room.

“We didn’t want to lose the character of the space,” the homeowner shared, “we just needed it to feel more intentional.”
