_Things I Wish Every Homeowner Knew Before Starting a Home Project

If I could sit down with every homeowner before they started a renovation, there are a handful of things I'd want them to know.

After working with hundreds of clients, I've seen the excitement that comes with planning a project—but I've also seen the frustration that can happen when people are making decisions without all the information.

The good news? A little knowledge upfront can save you time, money, and a whole lot of stress.

Here are a few things I wish every homeowner knew.

Porches need painting too. This got a major refresh!
A complete transformation to this porch simply using paint!

Paint Isn't “Just Paint”

This is probably one of the biggest misconceptions I hear.

Paint isn't simply picking a color you like.

The sheen, quality, application method, lighting in the room, surrounding finishes, and even the preparation beforehand all make a huge difference in the final result.

I've seen beautiful homes completely transformed with the right paint selections. I've also seen expensive renovations feel “off” simply because the paint color wasn't working with the rest of the space.

Paint is often one of the last decisions people make but it should never be an afterthought.

Lighting Changes Everything

If you've ever walked into a room and couldn't quite figure out why it didn't feel right, lighting is often the answer.

Lighting affects:

  • How paint colors look
  • How large a room feels
  • The mood of the space
  • Everyday functionality

Sometimes adding recessed lighting, under-cabinet lighting, new sconces, or simply changing fixture placement creates a bigger transformation than replacing cabinets or furniture.

It's one of the highest-impact updates you can make.

Bigger Isn't Always Better

Many homeowners assume the solution is adding square footage.

Sometimes it is.

But more often?

The issue is how the existing space functions.

I've worked on homes where we simply reconfigured storage, adjusted layouts, added better lighting, or improved flow and the house suddenly felt twice as large.

Good design isn't always about making a home bigger.

It's about making it work better.

You Don't Have to Gut Every Room

Social media has made it seem like every renovation has to be a complete demo.

It doesn't. Some of my favorite transformations have come from working with what homeowners already had.

Maybe the cabinets are still in great shape and simply need paint.

Maybe the flooring stays while we update everything around it.

Maybe a bathroom just needs a new vanity, lighting, hardware, and fresh paint.

A thoughtful refresh can often create the feeling of an entirely new space—without the cost of a full renovation.

Not Every Contractor Helps You Make Design Decisions

This is something many homeowners don't realize until they're already in the middle of a project.

Some contractors are there to build exactly what you've already decided.

Others, like our team at MeshedDesigns, help guide those decisions before construction even begins.

We spend a lot of time helping clients think through:

  • Material selections
  • Paint colors
  • Flooring
  • Lighting
  • Layout options
  • Budget priorities
  • The order projects should happen

Our goal isn't just to complete the work.

It's to help you make decisions you'll still love years from now.

The Order You Complete Projects Matters

One of the biggest mistakes I see is homeowners tackling projects in the wrong order.

Maybe they're ready to install new flooring but they're also thinking about remodeling a bathroom next year.

Or they replace trim before changing windows.

Or they repaint before updating lighting.

Sometimes slowing down long enough to create a plan actually saves thousands of dollars later.

A good renovation isn't just about choosing beautiful finishes.

It's about creating the right sequence so your investment works together.

Every Home Is Different

One of the things I love most about this job is that no two homes, or homeowners, are exactly alike.

There's rarely one “right” answer.

The best decisions come from understanding your home, your goals, your budget, and how you actually live in the space.

That's exactly what we help our clients do every day.

If you're planning a renovation, refresh, or even just wondering where to start, we'd love to help you create a plan that makes sense for your home.
